Do you struggle to find blog post ideas. No matter how long you’ve been writing, it’s still possible to struggle finding topics to write about. For me, I’ve been a professional writer for almost 15 years and I still have difficulty from time to time! Some days, I feel that my idea well is so barren that I am certain I’ll never be able to write that day. Of course, this never happens. I’ve learned some tricks that make writer’s block an impossibility. Here are some of my best strategies:
Keep an Idea File
I don’t know where I’d be without my idea file. Some days, I am at my creative peak. On these days. I brainstorm a list of several titles to save for those days that I really could use some extra help. On days when I am having trouble deciding what to write, I just pick one of these ideas! I’ve learned to take advantage of those days where I am at the top of my form mentally.
Draw from Real Life
Today, as I sat in front of the blank page wondering what to write for my blog post, I realized that all over the world, other bloggers are wondering the same thing. That was my real life scenario – wondering what to write. Once I realized other writers would find a post on how to generate ideas to be valuable, I knew what I had to do.
Read Similar Blogs
Do you read blogs in the same niche as you? If not, you should. They can definitely help you come up with blog post ideas. I am not telling you to copy things other blogger have done. I am only suggestion that reading sites can definitely be inspiring.
Don’t Forget the News
I don’t always read the news – but I should. There could be hidden gems waiting to turn into a blog post. For example, I just browsed CNN.com and I see an article about how Microsoft may rename Internet Explorer…. interesting thought. Perhaps I can use this article as inspiration to write an opinion piece … how will this affect my internet business?
Ask Your Readers
Sometimes, I simply ask people what they want me to write about. In my last post, I talked about what a Meme is after a reader expressed that she didn’t quite understand what it was. Her question inspired me to write an entire post about it.
Sign Up for Google Alerts
It’s much easier for me to come up with topical information when I keep up on the industry. Whenever I start a new website, I sign up for Google Alerts in my top keywords. Each day, I get a roundup email with all the articles throughout the internet that had those keywords in it. For instance, if I were to start a site about traveling to Boston, MA, I would sign up for a series of alerts in keywords such as: Boston, Boston travel, Boston vacations, etc.
These are my favorite ways to generate blog post ideas. How do you come up with ideas for your articles? Leave a message in the comments and let me know! I am always looking for new tips.
